Tips On Maintaining Old cars

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

No matter how old your car is you will actually use it for a longer time when you know how to maintain it well. Old cars need maintenance as well like new cars. Listed below are the essential things you must remember to maintain your old vehicle.

Make sure that you change the oil every now and then. Changing the oil actually recharges the car so make sure to change oil regularly. Always do regular oil change. This is one of the easiest way to lengthen the years of your car’s life.

Using the car at least twice a month will keep the car in running condition as well. Since the purpose of the parts of the car like the tires and engine is to turn and do some running, using the car will be good. Taking a leisurely road trip around your village is good for your car.

It is also wise to make a way to protect your old car from the elements. Having your old car parked in a covered garage will surely preserve your car. If you do not have a garage then just buy the lightweight cover available in the market to protect your car.

The most important thing though is to have a general maintenance with your mechanic. This will include checking the engine, tires, lights, battery and every part of your car. Make sure to also wash the interior and exterior part of the car. Do some vacuuming for the interior of the car at least once weekly.

All of these things are very important to remember so you can always use your car even if it’s old. Old cars can become collector’s item so consider it an investment. It is wise to always do preventive maintenance than get headaches from huge bills brought about by damage that has collected through time.

Finding an Honest Mechanic

Monday, March 29th, 2010

One of my all time favorite movies is My Cousin Vinny. One of my favorite lines came from the character Mona Lisa Vito when she was asked what qualified her as an expert in automobiles. She responded, “Well my father was a mechanic. His father was a mechanic. My mother’s father was a mechanic, my 3 brothers are mechanics, 4 uncles on my fathers side…”. And that's how it was in my life. Everyone who is anyone in my family has or had a career in the automotive industry as mechanics.

This industry has often been maligned, so i feel it is my duty to stick up for it. My family of mechanics was that rare find… honest auto repairmen. People came from surrounding cities and waited for days to get an appointment at my Dad's shop. Here are some things to consider when you are looking for that honest someone to repair your automobile. It's based on my knowledge of the business.

• Don’t be afraid to ask questions, especially those you have about the repair bill. If the mechanic or their service manager knows that you are actually looking at the bill and aren't afraid to ask questions, they will be less likely to "pad the bill". I, unfortunately, have seen cases where a mechanic will charge for an additional hour or two of labor (and that's often at $50 to $70 an hour) and hide it somewhere in the bill. People are looking for the big outright scams that you see on TV, not this squirreling away of an additional hour or two to perform a service that didn't need to be done in the first place. Another example might be to charge you for a water pump gasket when it was already included in the price of the new pump.

• If you feel you have been charged unfairly, speak up! Complain a little! Most auto repair places will "adjust it" to keep you happy and coming back again. I don't want you to be unfair or dishonest yourself, but if you think a labor or part quote is too high, you need to complain… politely.

• If you can’t understand a company’s invoice (sometimes made confusing on purpose), tell them you need an explanation of what “brake job $300″ means. Don't leave the shop until you are happy with the description of the work that was done on your vehicle and what parts were used. In fact, ask them to write down a description of the work they did so you can keep it for your record of repairs on your car. It doesn't take the mechanic very long before they realize you are someone who will demand a full explanation or accounting of the charges and you're going to require it face to face. Don't deal with the cashier; ask to see the mechanic who worked on your car or his service manager.

I hope this helps some of you who haven't had the advantage of working in the auto repair business. It is a much needed industry and includes many hard-working honest car technicians.

Auto Repair General – Why Should We Try It?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

The general rule about scooters and auto repair, e.g. for hybrid cars but not exotic cars, in general is that they do not cost a lot of money but the charges vary depending on whether you repair your vehicle in Hollywood or in Texas.

If you get hold of the right place, auto repair general will nto cause you too much hassle. So a word of advice is to maintain all your vehicle repair details in one folder for future use.

Auto repair general done in a timely manner will cost you a lot of time, money and burden. Many vehicle owners take things such as brake pad repairs for granted. This is what causes troubles at the end.

Another common mistake done by car owners is to overlook timing belt replacement. We tend to think that the timing belt replacement is a big deal but in reality it is only a common auto repair in general that is needed to be performed on every vehicle that has run an  x  amount of miles. Therefore, when the time is up for your timing belt to be replaced, you should get down to auto repair in general in no time if you love your engine. If neglected, a bad timing belt can spell disaster for your vehicle.

Another category of auto repair in general has to do with replacing fuel pump and cleaning the injectors. Many websites point out that this is something that can be done by the vehicle owner but I’d caution you against it as it should not be attempted unless you are an expert in the field.

Auto repair in general can even mean menial tasks such as changing engine oil. This is a very simple job that is usually performed after every couple of thousands of miles.
If your car needs to undergo some major auto repair in general, it is always best to weigh the feasibility of replacing parts or buying a new car. These decisions should almost always be based on the finances involved. Therefore, being open to suggestions and being open to auto repairs in general will save you a lot of trouble on the way.

There s no need to be afraid of auto repairs in general. Automobiles are machines that need momentary enhancements and repairs along the way. So next time you are faced with an auto repair in general, do not worry!

It seems that a car is one of the most essential parts of our lives. We use it anywhere and everywhere we go and whatever we do.When we go to play or when we go to school we use it. With how important our cars are to us it makes sense that you do everything possible to take care of your car. Especially considering how much most people pay for cars.In this article we are going to look at some of the parts car which are important to be maintained.

The first important part of a car that must be maintained is the engine. It akes sense because a car would not be a car without an engine. Let that break down and you are in for an expensive repair. The funny thing is to take care of this part of your car is as simple as doing oil changes. I recommend to all my clients of my San Diego auto repair shop to change their oil regularly.

Part of taking care of your engine is making sure to do regular tune ups.Tuneups would be good for your car cause it can detect small problems of your car which can worsen into bigger problems. You get to replace fluids and filters. Plus by doing regular tune ups you will keep your car running clean. That is one of the major causes of failing a smog test in my San Diego smog check shop.

The breaks are another part of the car which are very important to maintain. There are several reasons for you to take care of your brakes.Of course, safety is the most obvious reason. It is your brakes which will save you if you need to stop suddenly. It is also the part that can harm you if it fails. It is still expensive to repair even though a break is just a small part of a car. People are shocked in my San Diego brakes service how expensive it could be.

So those are the parts of the car that you must always maintain.

Maintaining their car is one of the most neglected things that people must do.But when you think about that is not the right thing to do.After all, a car is not something cheap and you invested a lot of money in buying it.That is enough motivation for you maintain it well. Especially since the consequences of not maintaining it is more expensive than if you did do maintenance. That is in this article why I present to you three tips in maintaining your car.

First tip I can give you is to regularly change the oils of your car.The oil of the car is just like the blood of the people if our car’s oil is already dirty then the car can’t function well. Generally I tell all my customers of my San Diego auto repair shop to make sure to change their oil every 3000 miles. That would be sufficient enough to keep your car running in good condition for a long time.

Another tip which can be very useful for the maintenance of your car is have it go through regular tuneups. It is important to make your car go through regular tuneups because this can detect any small problems and prevent it from getting worse. And you can also replace the important parts of your car if they are getting old already. Customers of my San Diego smog check shop who fail their smog test I always tell them to do this. They did not make their cars go through regular tuneups that is why they fail their smog test.

Third tip is to always look out for your brakes. They are important to maintain not because they are expensive to replace. They are very important because this is what keeps you from hitting other objects which can kill you.Working brakes can save your life while manfunctioning ones can kill you.  I tell my customers of my San Diego brakes shop to always keep their brake fluid good.

Another way to lengthen the life of your car is to make it undergo regular tuneups. It is one of the most overlooked things which you must do to your car.  I recommend all my clients of my Carlsbad auto repair shop to at least do it once a year. The reason behind this is that so the mechanics would see any problems that can get worse if unchecked.

Finally you want to be easy on driving your car.  It is an expensive investment so treat as such.If you drive hard then naturally your car will be affected. But if you take care when driving it will last a long time.  It is simple advice but it is advice I give all my clients of my San Marcos transmission repair shop.If they take care of their car their car will also do the same for them by servicing them for a long time.

The secrets in increasing your car’s lifespan

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Cars are one thing that almost everybody owns.  Not everybody may own a home. But most people in general have to own a car for many reasons.  Living in America it is hard to survive without owning one.It is important to make sure that you make your cars last longer, with that being the case.

The main way to do that I tell all my clients of my San Diego auto repair shop is to make sure you regularly maintain your car.It is like going to the doctor for regular checkups. Even though you are well, you are definitely willing to go to prevent any sickness. With cars, it is basically the same thing.Instead of waiting it is absolutely cheaper to take it in to ensure that nothing goes wrong.

The first thing you need to do is ensure that you take it in for regular tune ups.  Tune ups are where you check all the fluids and spark plugs. You also need to perform several diagnostic tests to ensure that the major parts are working well.Doing this ensures your car from running well.Passing the smog test will also help.  In my San Diego smog check service we always recommend older cars to do regular tune ups.Because the older your car gets, the tougher it is to pass the smog test.

Another thing you definitely need to maintain are your car’s brakes. This is basically important since brakes that fail are dangerous. Plus they are seriously expensive to have repaired.Like most things, it is better to keep in good condition than waiting for it malfunction.  All my San Diego brake service clients are given step by step instructions on helping maintain their brakes. This always helps them keep their brakes longer so that they can save in brake replacement.

So those are a couple of tips you can follow to make sure your car lasts longer. In the long run good maintenance saves you money by having less major repairs.

Caring for the two essential parts of your car

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

We need them, that is one certain thing about cars in our society. People in many places can’t really survive without a car. Yes there are buses but in this very busy life that makes it difficult.  Because cars are so important to our lives it makes sense to know how to care for them.  So we are going to look at two major parts of our car that always need to be maintained.

The engine is the first part that is very important to a car. This is similar to the car’s heart. It will die or stop working if you don’t take good care of this part of your car. So in my San Marcos auto repair service I make sure my customers know how important this part is.  But it is also easy to take care of. If a person wants to keep his car in a good shape he will just do regular tune ups and change oils.

Next car part that is essential is the transmission. This is critical in being able to drive your car. If your transmission breaks down so does any use of your car.  In my Carlsbad auto repair shop I see so many broken down transmissions.  Most of the breakdowns could have been avoided. The main method to do that is to ensure a sufficient supply of essential fluids at all times.  Plus to make sure to change gears gently and always at a complete stop.

As you can see taking care of your engine and transmission isn’t that difficult. All it requires is a commitment to make sure that that part of your car is taken cared.I tell all my clients of my shop that doing a little maintenance today will enable them to save a large amount of money in the future. They end up having cars that last a long time without any problems those who are willing to do that. Those who don’t end up with cars that is so faulty and problematic in the later times.

How to use auto maintenance to pass smog checks

Friday, November 13th, 2009

One of the duties every car owner has is having to maintain it’s engine. If you don’t make it a point to maintain your vehicle and neglect it, you will have expensive auto repair costs. If you make it a habit of neglecting it, you are in danger of failing even a smog test. With the consequences of failing a smog check also comes auto repair costs that will be expensive. Or you might even not be able to drive your car.So we shall take a look at some things you can do to help you avoid having some of these problems happening to you.

First of all as mentioned in the previous paragraph you have to keep proper maintenance.  All my clients of my San Diego auto repair shop I stress to them how important it is to bring their car in regularly.  Regular maintenance allows us to find problems before they get big.And just like practically all auto repair issues, the earlier you can fix something the less expensive it will be.

Another thing I try to make clear is that they need to have their oil changed regularly.  Failing to do that is sometimes the root cause of why my clients fail in my San Diego smog check service shop. But if they do consistently this one thing, they will have a car that runs smoother. In addition an engine that is well oiled generally lasts longer.

Finally the part of the car that is overlooked a lot of the times are the brakes.  This is one part of the car that is always used but often overlooked.  Whenever a customer of mine brings in a car to my San Diego brake service it is sometimes one of the most expensive repairs. So I emphasize the importance of taking better care of it in the future.Doing certain simple steps like making sure the fluids are at good levels.

So those are a few things that are something you can do to help you not have expensive auto repair charges.Plus it will also make it easier to pass your next smog check.

Cold weather and auto problems

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

As we move out of summer into winter things change.Weather is naturally one of them. But did you know the fact that as the weather changes our cars are also affected? It appears that auto problems are more prevalent during the winter season. If you live in a place where the weather is usually harsh then your car can really break down.We would be discussing some reasons as to why cars are affected by the weather.

In my San Marcos auto repair service the biggest cold weather problem are dead batteries. The reason for this is because when it is cold your battery has more work to do.And because of that it runs a little harder. You use your headlights more because the daylight is shorter. And the heater also takes more energy from the battery as compared to an aircon. So to prevent battery problems you must always look at your batteries if they are in good condition before going out in harsh weather.

Frozen fuel lines is another problem that cars usually encounter during a cold season.  This isn’t a big auto problem for my Carlsbad auto repair service.  But this is really prevalent in cities with very cold weather.  What happens is if you let your car run low on fuel condensation forms. And if that condensation freezes it can stop the fuel from flowing.  The best way to avoid that is to not let your fuel run low in the winter.

Tire pressure is another one of those problems when it is cold.Cold weather can make tires lose their pressure.  This isn’t a good thing because low pressured tires get balder faster.Bald tires is not good especially when the roads are icy or wet.So this problem is a serious one because it can be fatal. So always check your tire pressure.

So there goes some of the problems encountered by car owners when the weather is cold.  If you do those tips you can avoid some of them. And you do not want to encounter those problems especially during cold season.
